Hello everyone. My name is Gordon and I am running for the position of Town Councilor. In the past, I was elected as a Nipigon Municipal Councilor for two terms covering eight years. I enjoyed serving in this position immensely as I was able to assist our community and contribute to the well-being of residents.
My wife and I moved to this wonderful community 34 years go and we have been blessed with four children and now nine grandchildren.
I worked as a registered professional forester for over thirty years until the sub-prime housing collapse and the closing of seven of eleven sustainable woodland mills located along the north shore of Lake Superior. After this, I was privileged to work until my retirement, as a data analyst for a local social service organization, specializing in early years programming and family support.
Recent initiatives I have been proud to endorse:
- Local tree planting beautification and soil retention, in cooperation with Parks Canada (Bioblitz) and local elementary schools- 2,929 trees in the ground
- Member of the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital Board of Directors
- Healthy Kids Community Challenge, promote active living and healthy eating (data shows increased vulnerability in our community on the physical health and well-being of our children compared to the Ontario average)
- “Beatitudes” choir and musical ensemble
- Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 32 and past president
We own a 29 foot steel-hull boat and enjoy cruising on the big Lake Superior and support the National Marine Conservation Area and Parks Canada in their positive promotion of our region. I also enjoy reading and writing and have been active in a healthy dialogue on current events.
My vision for our community is to promote and attract small businesses and work more closely on the prospects of economic opportunities collectively with surrounding Municipalities and First Nations. This will enhance our taxation base and promote employment. I strongly support Suzanne Kukko in her quest as Mayor since she brings considerable experience to municipal and business affairs.
