The Township of Nipigon would like to remind residents that as the weather warms up, local bears are beginning to wake from their long winter nap and will be searching for food.
At this time of year, natural food sources can be limited, which means bears may be drawn into residential areas by garbage, bird feeders, BBQs, pet food, and other easy meals.
Residents can help keep our community safe by removing attractants before they become a problem:
✅ Store garbage in containers with tight-fitting lids, preferably indoors
✅ Put garbage out only on the morning of collection
✅ Remove bird feeders during the spring and summer months
✅ Clean BBQ grills and grease traps after each use
✅ Keep pet food indoors
✅ Keep dogs on leash
✅ Never feed or approach a bear
If you see a bear that is not an immediate threat, please call the Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327.
If a bear poses an immediate threat to personal safety, call 911.
