Job Title: Public Works Operator
Position Type: Full Time (Monday-Friday and weekends as required)
Location: Township of Nipigon
Reports to: Public Works Foreman
Job Summary:
Reporting to the Public Works Foreman or designate, the Public Works Operator is responsible for assisting with the operation, maintenance, and construction of municipal infrastructure and public spaces. This position involves operating a variety of municipal vehicles and equipment while supporting road maintenance, water and sewer infrastructure, municipal facilities, and community services.
The successful candidate will also be required to obtain training and provide occasional shift coverage at the Nipigon Community Centre as a Relief Facility Operator, supporting arena and facility operations as
needed.
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Operate light vehicles and a variety of specialized seasonal maintenance equipment.
• Operate heavy equipment such as grader (with or without snow wing), snow plow with wing, loader, backhoe, sweeper, and other municipal equipment.
• Perform routine maintenance and construction activities related to municipal infrastructure including roads, streets, boulevards, sidewalks, watermains, sewer mains, and municipal facilities.
• Assist with construction, maintenance, and landscaping projects throughout the municipality.
• Perform routine inspections (“circle checks”), preventative maintenance, and minor repairs on vehicles and equipment.
• Collect, transport, and dispose of garbage and other materials as directed.
• Clean public washrooms and other municipal facilities as required.
• Assist with the set-up and tear-down of municipal events and community functions.
• Provide shift coverage at the Nipigon Community Centre as a Relief Facility Operator, following training, when operational needs require.
• Follow policies and procedures established by Township Council, the Public Works Superintendent, and applicable regulations including those of the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario.
• Work collaboratively with other municipal staff while also completing tasks independently when required
Qualifications:
• Valid DZ Driver’s Licence with a satisfactory driving record.
• Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
• Experience operating heavy equipment is considered an asset.
• Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform routine equipment maintenance.
• Ability to work both independently and within a team environment. • Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions.
• Willingness to work flexible hours including overtime, standby, emergency call-outs, and occasional facility coverage shifts.
Salary:
Wage in accordance with the Collective Agreement with CUPE Local 87-09.
