Maurice the Moose launches “Fun 4 Days” at the Top of Lake Superior

The Top of Lake Superior Cruise Ship Committee has adopted a Moose mascot to welcome Clelia II Cruise Ship passengers to the communities of Nipigon, Dorion, Red Rock and Lake Helen this summer.

Maurice is launching "Fun 4 Days", a full schedule of events in the Nipigon, Red Rock and Dorion Area during July 8-12,and  July 22-26, to continue in September. The FUN days begin when the cruise ship arrives on Thursday at noon and continue until Monday when the ship departs.

The image of a moose has a long association with the Top of Lake Superior area, with Bullwinkle the moose as the current Nip-Rock Secondary School mascot , and the Nipigon Chamber of Commerce “Nipigonoose” tourism mascot in years past.

The Top of Lake Superior initiative is led by strong community and business partnerships. The early success of organizing the “Fun 4 Days” campaign is fuelling hopes that the cruise ship opportunity may spur the development of a tourism cluster in the area.

Dreams Come True as Nipigon Opens Paddle to the Sea Park

For Release May 14th, 2010

Dreams Come True as Nipigon Opens Paddle to the Sea Park

(Nipigon, ON) Despite a bit of chilly weather, the opening of the Paddle-to-the-Sea Park was well attended and enjoyed international participation with a wooden Paddle-to-the-Sea carving sent all the way to Northwestern Ontario from Atlanta, Georgia, and two entries for the Dare to Dream Art Project from Florida. Nipigon Mayor Richard Harvey says, “It’s amazing how well known the story of Paddle-to-the-Sea is around the world. The Paddle-to-the-Sea Park puts Nipigon on the map”.

The winner of the Dare to Dream Art Competition is Desiree Boulter, who created two pieces of art about her dreams. The first dream is “My dream for the future of Nipigon, my family and myself is: That jobs will be made in Nipigon, that my dad will get a good job here (he will not have to work away any longer,) and we can be together. Especially because I don’t want to have to move away.” Desiree’s second entry is “My dream is to be an author in my spare time. I hope to win several awards and make tons of money.” The presentation of Art Awards was done by Roma Kopechanski from OPG, Bruce Hyer M.P. and Mayor Richard Harvey. Desiree received a limited edition Paddle to the Sea Park Paddle, which is also a donation to the Nipigon Curling Club Junior Curling Program.

Biology Tour of Clearwater Creek by Ministry of Natural Resources

It was a full day of activities for local schools. “The day was successful because it incorporated new activities into the Park, for example, the kids loved geo-caching which is all about geography, and a great way to get kids interested in tourism.” said Barry Maurice, of the Land of Nipigon Chamber of Commerce. As volunteer Shauna Dampier explained to the students, Geo-Caching is like a high tech treasure hunt, where students use GPS units to find hidden caches within the Paddle to the Sea Park.

Nipigon Nylons Update

The New Beginnings Circle was founded in 2000 and is affiliated with  Paro Centre in Thunder Bay.  For more info www.paro.ca or info@paro.ca.

Circle members include local business women Levina Collins, Patricia Dellaceccea, Tasha Sutton, Norma Fawcett, and Linda Harbinson.  The Circle is well known for their presence in the community, supporting women and hosting events to make the community we live in a better place to be.  The Circle hosts two women networking dinners twice a year.

The slogan “Nipigon Nylons” was trademarked by the Circle in 2008.  As the story goes, in the old days women would wear their Nipigon Nylon wool socks under with their long dresses in attempts to stay warm.  This depicts the spirit of the strong, pioneer women of the North.  In the hardest of economic times some humour and fun makes the idea catchy for the nippy times.   The summer of 2009  launched the unveiling of the Nipigon Nylon  photo stand,  erected at the Nipigon Tourist Information booth.  Stop by and have your photo taken wearing the Nylons!  Nipigon Nylon colouring books with crayon packs are also available at the Tourist Info booth and are being distributed throughout the region.

Nipigon Nylons are packaged up nicely in little brown paper bags with a tiny tag bearing the history of these Nipigon Nylons. They sell for $9.95.  Small Nipigon Nylon pins bearing the TM are also available for sale and sell for $5.00.  Nipigon Nylon products are available at Twigs in Bloom 20 Riverview St, Nipigon Fun Dollar Store 24 Front St., Nipigon Museum 40 Front St. and the Skandia House 17 Second St.,  The  Paro Presents Store 111 May St. in Thunder Bay also sells the product.  Should you want a mail order package sent out to you please email tasha.sutton@hotmail.com.  (shipping costs are extra).   Nipigon Nylons TM have travelled all around the world from Afghanistan to the North Pole.
